How it works

How Bnewable uses peak shaving to cut your grid fees

Load peaks are the most expensive part of your grid fees

Load peaks happen when your site pulls an unusually large amount of power from the grid at once. This can happen when you start up energy-intensive equipment, or charge several EVs at the same time. For grid operators, these peaks mean stress on the grid. For you, they mean cost: your capacity tariff is calculated from your peak demand, the highest load peak recorded during the billing period.

Your electricity peaks cost you all year round

Your grid fee is driven by your highest 15-minute power peak each month. One spike is enough to raise your costs and it stays baked into your fee for months after. Using Bnewable's battery storage system to cut your peaks is the most direct way to bring your energy bill down.

Lower grid fees, for good

Bnewable's battery storage system steps in the moment your demand spikes, covering the extra load so it never hits the grid limit. Your profile stays flat, your grid fee stays low, automatically, every day, without you having to think about it.

How Bnewable can reduce your grid fees by 80.000/MW

This graph shows a typical day for an industrial site with a clear morning demand peak. Without a battery, the site's grid draw peaks at 3.0 MW at 08:00.

With the battery, net grid load is capped at the 2.0 MW grid capacity threshold, shaving 1.0 MW (1,000 kW) off the peak. The battery recharges overnight while load is low. The value of peak shaving is €84,000 a year.Load without batteryNet grid load with batteryGrid capacity thresholdGrid capacity threshold: 2.0 MW3.0 MW peakCapped|at 2.0 MW-1.0 MW shaved|1,000 kW off the peakValue of peak shaving€84,000 / year

Bnewable does more than peak shaving to maximize the value of your battery storage

Your capacity tariff is only set by a handful of 15-minute peaks each month, the rest of the time, a battery used only for peak shaving would sit idle. That's why Bnewable puts your battery to work on other things too: optimize solar self-consumption, virtual grid reinforcement, and energy market trading. Together, they increase the total financial value of your battery storage.

How indoor skydiving company, Luxfly is using Bnewable's Peak Shaving feature

We experience a daily window of unused grid capacity, combined with high peaks in energy consumption when long queues of visitors start to form. Bnewable helps us optimize our energy consumption in this case by participating in the flexibility market, and supporting Elia in grid balancing.

Battery-as-a-Service

Peak shaving with Bnewable: where do you start?

Your project with Bnewable follows the Battery-as-a-Service model: you pay a fee only when the battery is actively lowering your electricity costs, and you keep the larger share of those savings. The rest of the time, Bnewable trades on the energy market using your battery, and you get a cut of that too. Either way, you reduce your energy costs and earn extra revenue, with no investment, and no extra staff required.

1

We project your potential savings

We size the battery to your consumption, peak loads, solar generation, and grid connection, then calculate what you'd save before you commit to anything.

2

We invest in the battery, you keep your capital

Bnewable covers the full cost of the system. You provide the space and the grid connection; your capital stays in your core business.

3

We build it, you run your business as usual

Energy storage comes with complex permitting. We handle planning, permits, and installation, while your operations continue as usual.

4

We operate it and absorb all risks for you

We keep the battery running at peak efficiency, cutting demand peaks, maximizing your solar use, or earning market revenue. Maintenance is on us too.

FAQs about
peak shaving

It depends on your profile. For most industrial sites, capacity and grid costs increasingly drive that share. Your bill splits into three parts: what you consume, what you pay for the peak you reach, and the taxes and levies that apply to both. A site with sharp, short peaks pays disproportionately for them.

Your energy invoice charges you on your highest quarter-hour of the month. As your site's demand climbs toward that level, Bnewable Voltana discharges the battery storage system to cover the top of it, so the grid only sees what's left and the meter never records the peak. Nothing changes on your side. Your machines run exactly as before.

Peak shaving lowers only your peak energy use. Your total consumption across the month stays the same; Bnewable Voltana simply shifts when that energy is drawn from the grid, discharging the battery storage system to cover the top of your demand curve. The saving shows up in your capacity charge, which is priced on your highest measured quarter-hour of the month.

Peak shaving alone typically doesn't cover the full payback of a battery storage system. It lowers your capacity charge every month, and Bnewable Voltana adds further revenue by trading the battery storage system on the markets during the hours your site isn't peaking. Together, these two use cases are what typically justify the investment.

No, peak shaving does not disrupt your production or operations, and if the battery storage system is ever unavailable, your site simply draws from the grid as it does today. The battery storage system sits alongside your installation and discharges into it, so your equipment sees the supply it always sees. Nothing about your process changes, and no load gets shed or rescheduled. Bnewable Voltana holds the site inside its electrical limits and protects the main fuses throughout.

Yes, peak shaving still works if your load isn't flexible or schedulable. Bnewable Voltana shifts the load using the battery storage system, so your process keeps its own rhythm and never has to adjust its schedule. Traditional peak shaving methods that rely on scheduling require movable load, which many industrial sites don't have. Battery storage-based peak shaving removes that requirement, since the battery storage system absorbs the peak instead of asking the process to change.
