Use case - Maximize flexible grid connection

Don't let the grid put your electrification plans on hold

Your grid study says "flexible grid connection." Now what? Bnewable absorbs the capacity reductions, so you sign your flexible grid connection contract with confidence, and electrify now instead of waiting years for a grid upgrade.

How a flexible grid connection without oversight could hurt your business

Power reduction doesn't follow your production schedule

Under a flexible grid connection contract, the grid operator can reduce your available capacity whenever the zone is congested. Those signals don't care about your demand peaks.

Grid congestion will follow you for years

Flexible grid connections aren't a temporary workaround; they're how congested zones will work for years to come.

Delivering flexibility isn't your core business

Responding to flex signals in real time takes expertise and 24/7 monitoring. Building all that capability in-house makes no sense for just one industrial site.

How your flexible grid connection becomes reliable with Bnewable's battery storage

Battery storage makes a flexible grid connection reliable: when the grid reduces your capacity, stored energy fills the gap. But that only works if someone actively manages it: when to charge, when to cover a reduction, when to trade. That's where Bnewable comes in.

Automatic response to flex signals

Bnewable Voltana, our own energy management software, responds to every flex signal from the DSO, TSO, or grid operator on your behalf. The battery delivers the contractual flexibility; your operations run untouched.

1

Capacity cap coverage

When your capacity is reduced, the battery bridges the gap and powers your processes from stored energy. Production never slows, whatever the grid is doing.

2

Virtual grid expansion

Bnewable's battery takes over when your site needs more power than your grid connection can handle. You get the extra capacity of a grid upgrade, without the years of waiting or the costs that come with it.

3

Energy trading

Bnewable's energy management system, Voltana trades your battery's flexibility on the energy markets, adding a revenue stream on top of your savings, automatically.

How Decospan has cut their monthly electricity costs by 00% with Bnewable

We have a 12+ projects running at the same time, so we relied on Bnewable to handle BESS from A to Z. I told them if I don't hear anything, it's going well. And it's been like that still to this day.

FAQs about flexible grid connections

Yes. A flexible connection means the grid operator can limit your capacity at certain moments, and the battery storage system covers your site during those periods so your process keeps running. Bnewable Voltana holds the site inside the limit that applies at the time. Outside those periods, the same battery works on your peaks and on the markets.

Fluvius sets that per zone, in writing, before you sign. A Fall-Back Flex connection gives you access to the power you asked for, and Fluvius can ask you to limit it temporarily when the grid comes under pressure, always inside arrangements agreed up front. The zone sheet for your area states the flexible power in MVA, the modulation volume in MVAh, and the period it runs for, with an indication for the years ahead. How you reduce your power is your own choice.

Yes, that is exactly what the sizing study is for. Your zone sheet states the flexible power and the modulation volume Fluvius can call on, so Bnewable sizes the battery storage system against those figures. Bnewable's battery storage system covers the limited portion while your process keeps running, and Fluvius sees the reduction it asked for.

Flexible grid connection buys you access rather than a discount. Fall-Back Flex is what gets you connected or upgraded in a congestion zone while the network investment is still being built, and Fluvius presents it as a temporary formula. Flanders is still developing the structural framework for flexible connection agreements, and existing Fall-Back Flex contracts will convert to it automatically once that framework is in place.

This is delivered through virtual grid extension. Bnewable's battery storage system covers the gap between what your site draws and what your connection allows. When demand rises above your contracted capacity, the battery storage system supplies the difference behind the meter, so the power drawn through your grid connection stays within its limit. Your connection contract stays unchanged.
